How to Remodel a Bathroom
Posted by John in category baths and renovationBefore starting out to remodel the bathroom, it’s a very good idea to design the new one and plan the project. A lot of different factors are involved, the first having to do with the extent of the project. If you are planning to remodel within the existing room, it may be that what’s involved will be a new floor, vanity & sink top, tub and/or shower encloure, and toilet. If, however, you’re planning on getting a bit more ambitious and are thinking about expanding the size of the bathroom, you’ll need to consider demolition, framing, new subfloors, additional plumbing, re-wiring and certain other factors. For the purposes of this article we’ll explore a more cosmetic remodel and stay away from major construction.
A typical bathroom remodeling project involves replacing three major components: the tub and/or shower, the vanity and sinktop, and the toilet. The good news regarding this is that there are standards which are adhered to concerning the manufacture of bathroom fixtures, so that even if your tub and toilet are forty years old the new ones are built to fit. For example, the standard size for a tub enclosure is sixty inches, and that’s the size standard tubs are made.
The first step is to remove the existing fixtures. Once that is done,
it’s a good time for new paint. If need be, the door and window (if any) can now be replaced. The existing tub/shower plumbing can be made suitable for a variety of applications, including bathtub, tub/shower combo, or a shower-only set up. Vanities can be purchased pre-made, or a custom cabinet can be built.
When the tub/shower and vanity are in, it’s time for ceramic tile and/or natural stone decisions. The tub and shower area, vanity top, and floor are the most commonly tiled, but wainscot and backsplash can be considered as well. Tile and stone is a very important aspect of the bathroom remodel, and by shopping around for design ideas you can create unique and functional designs which will greatly add to the overall appeal of the remodelling project. Should you choose, however, there are numerous manufactured products on the market which can be substituted for tile or natural stone. Finally, installation of the new toilet is done, and various touch-up work completes the bathroom remodel.
Most bathroom remodeling projects are fairly straight word as long as you prepare and plan properly.
